Leave Your Comfort Zone and Enter Your ‘Growth Zone’

Life is full of opportunities to step outside the comfort zone, but grabbing hold of them can be difficult. Sometimes the problem is not being aware of reasons to do so. After all, if the feeling of comfort signifies our most basic needs are being met, why should we seek to abandon it? What holds people back most of the time is their frame of mind rather than any distinct lack of knowledge. This article looks at the shifts in thinking required to step outside of comfort and into personal growth. Along the way, we’ll outline useful tools, tactics, and examples to help make leaving the comfort zone as rewarding as possible. What Is the Comfort Zone in Psychology? Now firmly embedded in cultural discourse, the metaphor of ‘leaving one’s comfort zone’ became popular in the 1990s. The phrase ‘comfort zone’ was coined by management thinker Judith Bardwick in her 1991 work Danger in the Comfo…

Most Mild COVID Cases Leave Long-Term Symptoms

A little more than two out of every three people who have mild or moderate cases of COVID-19 will go on to develop long-term symptoms. That's the troubling takeaway from a University of Arizona Health Sciences' study launched in May 2020. "This is a real wake-up call for anyone who has not been vaccinated," said lead researcher Melanie Bell, a professor of biostatistics in the university's College of Public Health. "If you get COVID, the chances that you'll experience long-term symptoms are surprisingly high." The CoVHORT study has followed Arizonans who had COVID-19 since May 2020, as well as those who have not been infected. Among participants who tested positive for COVID-19, nearly 69% still had least one symptom after 30 days, and the rate rose to 77% after 60 days. Those with long COVID tended to be less educated, to have seasonal allergies and pre-existing health condition…

Delirium and PTSD are two common symptoms of ICU stays

"There were multiple times ... when I would wake up screaming because I couldn't deal with it anymore. It was like this evil darkness that didn't even have a face." Rebecca Craven is describing the nightmares she experienced as a patient in intensive care. In her early 20s, she found herself in ICU after suffering heart failure from a virus she caught in Bali. While in there she experienced delirium, a common condition among ICU patients that can involve frightening hallucinations. "If you survive ICU and you've had delirium, your mortality is three times higher in six months," says John Fraser, a professor of intensive care medicine and Director of the Critical Care Research Group at the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane. "Your risk of PTSD is higher than that of a Vietnam veteran. "Your ability to go back to work and hold down a job is dramatically diminished. "Your risk of relatio…

Booster campaign for old and vulnerable must begin soon

A Covid-19 vaccine booster campaign should begin quickly for those aged over 80 and in certain vulnerable groups in the UK, an expert has said. Professor Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia said people who had had the vaccine but did not respond well “need to be boosted soon”. Within that category are: people with severe underlying disease; people with severe cancers that are on chemotherapy; people on high-dose steroids for autoimmune diseases; people who have had solid organ transplants; people who are actually morbidly obese. I would also add over-80s to that category. Prof Hunter added that a wider booster campaign may not be needed as vaccines are still effective at preventing serious illness, hospitalisation and death - and said the UK will learn to live with around 45,000 coronavirus infections a day as the virus becomes endemic. An Israeli woman receives a third bo…

COVID cases are rising in highly vaccinated Israel

Israel has one of the highest COVID vaccination rates in the world, having fully vaccinated 78% of people 12 years and over. Many people are surprised at the country’s resurgence of COVID cases since restrictions were lifted in June. Israel’s vaccination rate is similar to Australia’s plan to start relaxing restrictions when 70% of over-16s are fully vaccinated. So, why are cases surging in Israel? And what can Australia learn from it, particularly as Sydney charts its path out of the pandemic? Herd immunity is much harder with Delta Around 25% of Israel’s population is younger than 12, so the whole population vaccination rate is only about 60% (including a small proportion of children under 12 with high-risk medical conditions who’ve also been vaccinated). Even with last year’s virus and the use of the Pfizer vaccine, that wouldn’t be enough for herd immunity. The Delta variant, whi…
